Community Programs

The Alameda County Women’s Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding women for their achievements and contributions to our County and its residents. The program honors outstanding women at a luncheon and awards ceremony every March, during Women’s History Month. It also generates funds to support programs helping women and families in Alameda County. The Alameda County Women’s Hall of Fame is endorsed by the Alameda County Board of Supervisors.

The Alameda County Citizens Academy is a free 6 session interactive forum for people who live, work, or own a business in Alameda County. The Academy is offered every fall to as many as 45 participants. Through presentations from County leaders and public policy exercises, the Citizens Academy helps participants increase their knowledge of local government. Participants learn about the wide range of services provided by Alameda County, our mission and strategic visioning initiative, and our budget development process. The Academy also teaches leadership and communication skills through public speaking and role playing exercises, while encouraging participants to increase their civic involvement.

New Beginnings is an innovative Alameda County Initiative that prepares youth for the future through education and job skills development. New Beginnings uses on-the-job training and mentorship to foster positive workplace habits in at-risk youth. The program inspires the confidence and professional competencies youth need to become productive, self-sufficient adults. County Administrator Susan S. Muranishi initiated the program in 2007 in collaboration with several other County agency heads and chairs the ad hoc New Beginnings County Committee.
